In 1924, George R. Pierce began selling used cars on his own. He rented the west half of a building at 30th and Montana Avenue in Billings, MT, where the original Pierce Flooring store would eventually be located. George always said he did not handle used cars, only "Experienced Automobiles."
A master organizer and salesman, George once heard a man remark, "Your place is so dirty. How can you get people to stand still long enough to sell them anything?" Thinking quickly, he replied, "The joint is dirty, but we are sociable." The phrase became part of his advertising, along with the playful myth of a dog called "Gum Shoe."
Over the years, George employed many men and boys, often providing meals and shelter during tough times. He always believed, "No one works for me, they work with me."
The original 5th Street West car lot eventually grew into Pierce RVs, Pierce Parts and Service, and Pierce Homes. Pierce Homes was established at Moore Lane and Laurel Road, proudly displaying an inventory of over half a mile of homes. In 2002, Ron Pierce relocated Pierce Homes, RVs, and Leasing to a brand-new facility on 27 acres just off I-90 at the Shiloh interchange. In 2011, another Pierce RV location was added in Great Falls, MT.
Today, the Pierce businesses have grown into a large Montana family-owned operation including seven flooring stores, the Pierce Homes and RV Supercenter, and Pierce RV Center in Great Falls. Ron Pierce is the sole owner of Geo. R. Pierce Inc., which employs over 170 people. The businesses remain rooted in hard work, honesty, trust, and taking great care of customers, suppliers, employees, and the community.
